Picture Process

After having not done a more 'refined' drawing in a while, I thought I'd take a few screenshots as I worked on this one. There's nothing spectacular about my process but this is for those who have asked me about it and for anybody else who's a bit curious!

Here is the finished illustration...

...and here are some snapshots of how it came about:

Some notes:
- Each colour is usually on a different layer and I use layer clipping masks to add gradients.
- Shadows are on a separate layer, above all others, using Multiply as the layer blend.
- I always keep the sketch in the corner while working, to help retain the original idea.

  2. i like your work

instead of working with many masks i create a folder and apply to it one mask in the shape of the entire character.
then inside the folder i can color in different layers to different parts of the body if i like (usually i don't bother) and if i like to add shades i can create clipping masks above the base color layer.
masks are annoying in my opinion clipping mask layers are much better for drawing in my mind.

  3. I've got ask about the rough texture on the edges of your blocks of colour. I know it's your trademark, but how are you doing this?

  4. Thanks guys!

@Gad - thanks for explaining because you made me realise that I actually use clipping masks too, not layer masks!

@Glenn - I don't know about that being my trademark, but the rough texture comes from the brush that I use. It's basically a thin-ish rectangular shape with scattering applied in the settings.
